Power Surge Cover

In this newsletter we are going to look at power surge cover.

Our Broadform Building and Community Living policies have a R50 000 power surge limit.

A power surge means damage caused by electrical power surge or power fluctuation.

A power surge is characterised by a sudden, short spike or interruption within a buildings electrical grid.

To obtain full power surge cover an item can be specified for its full under Section A - Buildings, which removes the power surge as well as the theft limitation (discussed in Part 1 of this newsletter).  Alternatively, the first loss limit for power surge may be increased to any required amount.

NB. when increasing a power surge limit or specifying an item in in excess of R100 000 a power surge protection device must be installed on the distribution board board and a certificate of compliance must be issued. If the required power surge protection is not installed power surge cover will remain limited to R50 000.

For expensive items such as lifts, it is recommended that the item be specified for its full value under the Section D / F - Machinery Breakdown. Power surge is covered in full under this section.

Our Broadform Homeowners Product has a power surge limit of R100 000 which can also be increased as described above.

In Part 3 we will look at cover options regarding power surge and lightning damage to alternative energy systems.
