As winter approaches, the season brings very different risks depending on where you live, but one thing remains the same: preparation can make all the difference.
In the Western Cape and along the country’s western coastline, winter is synonymous with cold fronts, driving rain, gale-force winds and localised flooding. Roof leaks, fallen trees, power surges and water damage become common household headaches as severe storms roll through.
The eastern parts of South Africa face a very different threat. After a wetter-than-normal summer, dense vegetation has dried out rapidly, creating fuel for runaway veld and bush fires. Dry conditions, gusty winds and unattended flames can quickly turn a small spark into a devastating blaze.
Emergency services are preparing for a challenging season as weather forecasts indicate that this winter could bring potentially dangerous conditions. Safire urges homeowners, landowners, farmers, businesses, and motorists to take a few simple but important precautions before severe winter weather arrives.
Early fire prevention
- Create a defensible space around homes by clearing dry grass and dead vegetation;
- Never leave fires, braais or burn piles unattended;
- Never light a fire in high winds;
- Store flammable materials safely and away from ignition sources;
- Ensure fire extinguishers are serviced and accessible.
Agricultural land is at high risk over this period, with veld and bush fires being a real threat. Bennie Boshoff, General Manager of Safire’s Insurance Division, says, “The National Veld and Forest Fire Act requires landowners to create and maintain firebreaks along property boundaries to prevent fires from spreading. Firebreaks should be wide enough to impede or completely stop a veld fire and must be kept clear of combustible material.”
Homeowners – Protect your property
- Clear gutters and stormwater drains to prevent flooding;
- Secure loose outdoor furniture, awnings and garden items ahead of strong winds;
- Trim overhanging branches that could damage roofs, vehicles or power lines;
- Check roofs, waterproofing and window seals for leaks before heavy rains begin.
Remember your vehicle
Winter roads can become dangerous very quickly. Wet weather reduces visibility and braking ability, while smoke from veld fires can create hazardous driving conditions. Drivers should:
- Check tyres, brakes and windscreen wipers;
- Avoid driving on flooded roads or low-water bridges;
- Keep headlights on during poor visibility;
- Maintain a safe following distance at all times, especially in rain, mist or smoke.
- Review your insurance cover
Extreme weather events can occur suddenly and without warning. Winter is the ideal time to review your insurance cover and ensure your home, vehicle and valuables are adequately protected against seasonal risks.
A little preparation today can prevent major losses tomorrow.
